As I am sure all families have realized in the Valpo Football program, there is a lot crammed into the short eight weeks of summer. As a recap we successfully had all of our twelve contact days, we completed our most successful fundraiser to date, our Varsity and JV football teams saw more competition this summer than we have in years past.
We tested ourselves against notable region opponents but also 6A powerhouses Lafayette Jefferson, Zionsville, and Lawrence North. To add to that we also completed another successful Olivet Camp where we squared off against 8A Evanston Township and the 2022 Illinois 5A State Champions, Nazareth Academy. Not to mention our Freshman team also saw more competition against other schools this year than they have in years past!
Each year it seems as if the summer flies by faster and faster, but I can tell you, we as a program made the most out of these last eight weeks. As we rolled into the first two weeks of pre-season we are operating ahead of where we have been in previous seasons from our Football IQ and also our competitive edge. This is not the full equation to a successful season, but it definitely helps.
This past Friday we hosted Gary Westside and East Chicago. This was a great opportunity to see two very different offenses and defenses, and we were finally able to tackle and be tackled. Most importantly we came out of the scrimmage healthy!
Penn always has been and will always be a formidable Week 1 opponent. This year is no different. Their offensive line is anchored by a two year starter at center who is 6"3 335 pounds. On the edges, at wide receiver, they have a lot of length with their shortest receiver measuring 6'3. They always have a solid running game backed up by a battle tested two year starter at QB.
Defensively, their front 8 of defensive lineman and linebackers are very quick and aggressive. All eight of them measure in at 6'0 or taller and over 200 pounds.
Special Teams have always been a big part of Penn's success both past and present. This year is also no different.
We look forward to the challenge and have been working extremely hard to take care of the small parts of our game that make the biggest difference when two teams are very evenly matched.
This Friday we will also recognize our senior class of 36 players and two senior managers. These young men and women have devoted so much time, energy, and effort to the program over the last three, full years and we are so thankful for them.
BEAT PENN!
