Why So Many Football Programs Fundraise on the Fairway

Ever wonder why so many football programs fundraise on the golf course? What about how you can still support the Valparaiso Vikings — even if you don’t swing a club?

Every summer, across the country, football programs lace up… golf shoes?

It’s a trend that’s grown into tradition — trading cleats for clubs to raise funds, build community, and kick off the season with a different kind of teamwork. But what is it about golf that makes it such a reliable fundraiser for football teams like the Valparaiso Vikings?

We asked Coach Bill Marshall for his thoughts:

Golf has always been a great way to get a wide variety of people together. For those that play regularly or infrequently, we all understand how much of a mental game golf is, but it's much better played with friends and family.
For us as a football program it is a nice break from the physical aspects of our sport where we can come together and support each other, smile and laugh at one another, and realize that the game of golf can be played by most people for much longer than we will be playing football.
It provides networking opportunities, the ability to get outdoors and be active, to raise some money for a great cause, and for us to give thanks to all those sponsoring us and supporting us throughout the upcoming season and beyond.

Golf Brings People Together

Unlike quick-hit fundraisers, a golf outing gives players, families, alumni, and community supporters hours to connect. Whether you're catching up on the tee box or high-fiving after a long putt, it’s a setting that builds deeper bonds — and lifelong memories.

It’s a Fundraiser People Want to Join

Let’s be honest: Golf outings are fun. Food, prizes, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs make it an easy “yes” for supporters. And when local businesses step in with hole sponsorships or auction items, it turns into a win-win.

It Starts the Season With Momentum

For a high school football team, summer can feel quiet — but our auction and golf events help keep the Valpo Vikings top of mind in the community. These events remind everyone that support doesn’t start on opening night — it starts now.
